Using Lighting Cues for Your Wedding | PORT Lighting

Lighting cues are probably something you think of that a director devises as part of a theatrical production to highlight actors and set features, props, and other elements of a play. But lighting cues can also be used to add drama to a wedding reception for a custom look and feel that wows guests. Event lighting can enhance your venue, set the mood, highlight your décor, and create a celebration that reflects the personality and style of the bride and groom.

The first step to using lighting to create your dream wedding is finding a lighting pro who can realize your vision. Many work in theater and events and use similar technology for both. Ask prospective lighting companies what type of equipment they use, how much experience they have with events, and if they can provide references.

Pin spotlights 

Pin spotlights are essentially small, but powerful spotlights that can highlight significant elements at your event. For example, a pin spotlight can illuminate a floral centerpiece, creating an eye-catching display. Pin spots, usually white or warm white hues, can also be used to draw attention to the wedding cake, or place cards. Your lighting pro can control the intensity of the pin spot so it doesn’t overpower other elements in the room.

Patterns

A skilled lighting pro can use gobos to design virtually any type of pattern to enhance a wedding celebration. Gobo, short for “Go Between Optics,” describes the location where the projection pattern is placed, inside or outside the lighting source. These metal or laser-cut stencils project a pattern where the light hits. Gobos for weddings are usually made of metal and can enhance and complement your party in a variety of ways. Project the bride and groom’s initials on the dance floor or a curtain behind it, or cast a festive pattern on the dance floor, enticing guests to hop to their feet and cut a rug.  Gobos can also be used at the center of tables instead of centerpieces or mimic stars or even a luminous moon gradually rising over a tented ceiling.

String lights and fairy lights 

These small white or colored electric lights evenly spaced along a cable can be used to create a twinkly, ethereal ambiance. Fairy lights on a curtain behind where you say vows provide a subtle glow, while string lights interspersed with draped fabric on a tented ceiling imparts a dramatic look. Drape branches with string lights for an indoor, wintry tableau.

Laser lights

One way to truly impress your guests is with laser lights. Projected as either animated beams or static graphics, the two can also be used in tandem. Unlike gobos, computer-controlled laser lights can create animated images such as “fireworks,” water patterns, or other aerial projections. Your event lighting specialist can customize high-impact, colorful laser light effects to match the character of your event. 

Uplighting 

Uplighting is an event lighting staple for good reason!  It’s an excellent way to create ambiance at any festivity. Your lighting designer can place uplights on strategic locations on the ground or floor. The light projects upward to create a pillar of light effect and draw attention to points of interest, such as a photo booth, or even emphasize the texture of luxurious curtains.
