The PORT Perspective

MFA Council Party - Summer indoor outdoor lighting

We were thrilled to bring the energy and warmth of a summer rooftop party to life in the stunning Shapiro Courtyard at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This event posed unique challenges, but we were ready to meet them with creativity and precision.

With only a 4-hour window to complete the entire setup, our team had to work swiftly and carefully—especially since we were installing lighting around a priceless Dale Chihuly glass sculpture. Suspended dramatically from the ceiling, this breathtaking art piece demanded extra attention and care during rigging to ensure it remained untouched and safe throughout the process.

To create the desired summer party atmosphere, we installed nine runs of festoon string lights, each spanning an impressive 120 feet. These strings were suspended a full 30 feet above the event space, crisscrossing the open courtyard to form a canopy of warm, glowing light. The design featured an alternating pattern of frosted G40 bulbs and standard-size clear incandescent bulbs, creating texture, dimension, and a relaxed, inviting ambiance from every angle.

That’s a total of 540 light bulbs—meticulously prepped, positioned, and powered for one seamless, visually stunning effect.

In addition to the overhead lighting, we provided carefully programmed uplighting and accent fixtures throughout the space. From the stage lighting to the subtle color washes along the walls and ceiling, every fixture was chosen to complement the festoon canopy and enhance the architectural beauty of the venue.

This installation is a perfect example of how thoughtful lighting design can completely transform a space and set the tone for an unforgettable event. Whether working within tight timeframes or navigating sensitive environments, Port Lighting delivers exceptional event lighting design with professionalism, precision, and style.
