Elevate Events: Spectacular Drone Shows

If you watched the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, you saw the gorgeous fireworks display. A “ring of fire” in a rainbow of vibrant hues illuminated the night sky. But as spectacular as those pyrotechnics were, they weren’t the true star of the show.

For the finale, a set of blue, complex geometric shapes gradually appeared in the sky over the Japan National Stadium. They slowly morphed into an astonishingly realistic 3-D sphere, and then a globe, eventually transitioning into the blue and white checkered emblem of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. That stunning display was the product of a drone light show.

Lighting+Production Drone light shows are giant aerial images performed by hundreds or thousands of synchronized drones illuminated with LED lights. Each drone is a 3D pixel that we can position anywhere in the sky. We use a computer program to direct the drones and form patterns, images, and movement in the sky.

Ars Electronica Futurelab presented the first drone display using 49 tiny drones in 2012 in Linz, Austria. Since then, these high-tech light shows have become much more elaborate and increasingly popular.

Sporting events

The 2017 Super Bowl, during Lady Gaga’s halftime performance, was the first time drones were incorporated into the event. By 2022, the halftime drone light shows had evolved into more sophisticated animations and designs, featuring the NFL logo and even a football player catching a ball. At any sporting event, glowing team logos and victory proclamations increase spectators’ excitement and enhance team pride.
