Transforming Pedestrian Bridges with Innovative Lighting Solutions
by PORT on Jan 16, 2025 4:19:39 PM
Pedestrian bridges are more than functional pathways—they are architectural features that can be enhanced through innovative lighting design. At PORT, we specialize in creating visually striking and functional lighting systems for bridges of all types. By combining expertise in design, installation, and cutting-edge technology, we’ve illuminated several notable pedestrian bridges with custom solutions that reflect each client's vision.
In this blog, we’ll highlight three of our recent projects, each showcasing unique designs tailored to the structure and its purpose.
January 2025:
1. A Corporate Gem Outside Boston
Design Details:
This glass-enclosed bridge features fixtures mounted directly to the windows. Custom metal light shields, painted to match the bridge, ensure that the lighting components remain hidden from interior views. This meticulous attention to detail preserves the bridge’s clean, corporate aesthetic.
Lighting Features:
-
Fixtures: Color Kinetics linear lights.
-
Controls: Pharos, offering flexible programming and cloud connectivity.
Programming Customization:
Our team collaborated extensively with the corporation to craft a lighting schedule reflecting their needs. The system transitions through five seasonal themes—Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Holiday—each featuring 30-minute dynamic and static light shows. Programming begins 30 minutes before sunset, ensuring a fresh visual experience for passersby every few days.
Project Challenges:
This new construction project allowed us to work seamlessly without shutting down the bridge. Over 540 fixtures were installed and programmed, delivering a vibrant and dynamic lighting system for the 300+ foot structure.
2. Uplighting for Safety and Durability
Design Details:
Located in a public open area, this pedestrian bridge uses uplighting to highlight its metal fence. To minimize damage or tampering, the fixtures were mounted on the exterior, making them inaccessible to the public.
Lighting Features:
-
-
Fixtures: Color Kinetics linear lights rated for exterior use.
-
Controls: Pharos, enabling cloud-connected functionality for remote access and troubleshooting.
-
Longevity and Maintenance:
With proper maintenance and the ability to update programming remotely, the system is designed to last 10 - 20 years, maximizing its value. The installation process was swift, taking less than a week, as it did not require custom shields.
3. Highlighting Architectural Ceilings
Design Details:
This semi-enclosed bridge features linear lights mounted on steel beams above the windows, creating an elegant uplighting effect on the ceiling. Custom light shields were used to hide the fixtures, ensuring the focus remains on the architectural design.
Lighting Features:
-
Fixtures: Color Kinetics linear lights, exterior-rated but protected from direct exposure.
-
Controls: Pharos, offering flexibility and cloud-based updates.
Seamless Installation:
Our team completed the installation while keeping the bridge open, ensuring public safety by blocking off one side at a time. This efficient approach minimized disruptions while delivering a high-quality result.
