When it comes to crafting unforgettable events, lighting is the secret ingredient that sets the mood and transforms spaces. At PORT Lighting, our skilled designers, Chris B. and Sean P., know how to transform a simple venue into a stunning show. In this blog, we explore 8 creative lighting ideas that can elevate your event design.
We talked with Chris and Sean to learn how lighting can bring your ideas to life. They shared inspiration and tips for event planners, wedding planners, and designers.
Question 1: What are some of the most creative lighting ideas you've implemented recently?
Sean: One of the most creative approaches we’ve taken involves combining off-the-shelf lighting fixtures, like chandeliers, lamps, and light bulbs, with our professional-grade gear. These accessible items can serve as unique focal points, and when paired with professional lighting, they can be enhanced to create an extraordinary ambiance. It’s about blending the familiar with the innovative to craft something truly special.
Chris: We’ve been experimenting with fabric and layering lighting on it in various ways. For instance, uplighting some fabric while using LED color changing lights behind it creates a mesmerizing effect, as the light diffuses through the translucent material. Rear-projecting onto fabric can also add a unique visual element, creating depth and intrigue.
Shown above is an example of combining off-the-shelf lighting fixtures with professional-grade gear.
Question 2: How can lighting be used to enhance the overall aesthetic of an event space?
Sean: Lighting has the power to completely transform a space when executed correctly. It enhances the guest experience by complementing the character of the venue. Highlighting distinct architectural features can elevate the aesthetic, making the space more engaging. Even if the venue was chosen for reasons other than its aesthetics, like budget or space, lighting can bring the desired ambiance, drawing attention to key elements and masking less desirable aspects.
Chris: Many people underestimate the power of lighting to transform a space. It’s not just about adding lights; it’s about creating an experience. Lighting can evoke feelings and moods in ways that often go unnoticed but have a profound impact on the overall aesthetic.
Question 3: What are some unique ways to incorporate lighting into event decor and design?
Sean: Collaboration is key. A cohesive design across all elements creates the best environment for guests. For example, if the room is beautifully lit but the decor elements are neglected, the overall design lacks harmony.
It’s important to have conversations about what elements need light and the best way to light them. For instance, a florist's beautiful arrangement can lose its impact if it's washed out with too much color. The goal is to enhance, not overpower.
Chris: Incorporating Titan Tubes as centerpieces or using globes and auras to pinspot tables can create a striking visual. These elements allow for flexibility in color and focus, adding layers to the decor. For example, using a white zoom to enhance table settings adds a sophisticated touch, while changing colors can dynamically alter the atmosphere.
Shown above is an example Titan Tubes used as centerpieces on the tables.
Question 4: How can lighting be used to create mood and ambiance for different event types?
Sean: Lighting can be tailored to fit the mood of any event. Often, venues come with utilitarian lighting that’s bright and unflattering. A professional lighting design can adapt the ambiance to fit the event’s tone, using the best angles, intensities, and colors.
For example, a warm, inviting reception can transition into a more intimate dinner setting, eventually evolving into a lively party atmosphere. Each phase can be enhanced with specific lighting choices that guide the mood.
Chris: Understanding what moves people is crucial. I recall working on a giant tent event where the client wanted it to mimic Japanese lanterns. We used 600 lanterns, and it looked stunning, but with color-changing capabilities, it could have been even more amazing. The key is to connect with the client’s vision and use lighting to tell their story.
Shown above is an example of how lighting can make a setting more intimate.
Question 5: Can you share tips on how to use lighting to highlight key features or focal points in a venue?
Sean: People are naturally drawn to elements that stand out. However, this doesn’t mean everything needs a spotlight. Sometimes, a soft, warm light with just the right intensity can make an element pop without overwhelming the room. If the room is lit in vibrant colors, using a slightly brighter and less saturated shade of that color on focal points can make them stand out while maintaining cohesion.
Chris: Using spotlights on tables at precise angles, even using magnets on the ceiling, can create dramatic effects. Sometimes, it’s about lighting what’s already there, like adding pathway lanterns and uplighting on trees. These elements can add depth and make the surroundings more interesting.
Shown above is an example of using spotlights on tables at precise angles to create a more dramatic effect.
Question 6: What are some cost-effective lighting ideas that still have big impact?
Sean: Utilizing off-the-shelf lighting fixtures like lamps or unique light bulbs can create a significant impact without a hefty price tag. Accent lighting on focal points using pin spots is another affordable way to make an event shine. Uplighting, though slightly more expensive, can be highly effective and require less setup and programming time. It doesn’t need a complex control system if the design requirements are straightforward.
Chris: Adding lighting to existing features in the venue can create a significant impact without a large budget. For instance, strategically placing mirror balls and illuminating them with just a couple of lights can create a magical effect.
Shown above is an example of strategically illuminating mirror balls outdoors.
Question 7: How can lighting be used to enhance guest experiences or interactions during events?
Sean: Lighting has a psychological effect on guests. Proper lighting draws attention to highlighted elements and creates a comfortable atmosphere. When lighting matches the event's energy, it enhances the overall experience.
For example, at a concert, lighting that syncs with the band's performance adds to the excitement. Conversely, a room that’s too dark or too bright can negatively impact the ambiance, making guests feel less at ease. When used effectively, lighting can evoke emotions and elevate the event experience.
Chris: The moment guests arrive is crucial—it’s the perfect opportunity to make a statement. That’s when you want them to say, "Wow, this is cool!" Once the program starts, the lighting should support the event without being distracting. It's about striking the right balance between making an impact and ensuring a smooth flow.
Question 8: What advice would you give to event planners looking to experiment with creative lighting designs?
Sean: Don’t be afraid to ask your lighting designer to go big and bold. We love pulling out all the stops and have a plethora of ideas and resources at our disposal. It’s often easier to dial down the intensity of a design on-site than to scale it up, especially if you’ve already maxed out the setup. Communication is also vital.
If something doesn’t feel right during the design process, let us know early so we can make adjustments. You don’t need to worry about knowing the jargon—translating your vision into a lighting design is our job!
